What is a Home Security Monitoring System?

All right, you’ve made the decision to purchase a Home Security Monitoring System, now what?
First you must understand what makes up a Home Security Monitoring System, what is available, and what each company with a security system offers the home owner or renter for his dollar!
The basic components that make up a Home Security System are:
  1. a control panel
  2. the keypad
  3. motion detector(s) or what is called a PIR
  4. a glassbreak detector
  5. door and window contacts
  6. smoke and heat detectors
  7. and the monitoring service
Each of these components has a specific function that they perform so that the system can work together.
The control panel is basically the brains of the system, this is installed in an out of the way place and this is where all of the information is processed.
There are three types of Control Panels:
  1. hardwired
  2. wireless
  3. and a hybrid
The hardwired systems have all of their sensors wired directly to the control panel, these are usually found in older homes. The advantages to this was that it kept the cost lower and it required almost no owner maintenance to perform. The bad thing was that it limits your security options.
The Wireless Control Panel only requires at least two wires, the power and the phone line to work, all of the sensors or detection devices send a signal via a radio frequency back to the wireless control panel. This makes it easy to install, the only disadvantage is that it has a higher up front cost and it requires regular up keep, the checking and changing of batteries.
Now the Hybrid Control Panel, you get the best of both worlds, it combines the wireless and hardwired devices, which keeps the cost lower and makes the system versatile, but it does require some maintenance for the wireless sensors.
The Keypad is considered to be the heart of the system. The keypad interacts with the control panel, this is where you turn the system on and off, you read the status of your alarm system and program or enter your security codes. You usually only need one keypad for your security system, but you can have a second keypad installed near you bed or in your bedroom for ease of operation. This can keep you from walking all through the house when you are getting ready for bed, and you can also read the keypad in case the alarm should be set off without having to run to the other keypad.
Next in your system is the Motion Detectors, sometimes referred to as PIR(passive infared detectors), they usually mount on the ceiling or on the wall and possibly in the corner of the room, it senses changes in the air temperature in the room, when set up it will stabilize itself to the rooms temperature and when there is a sudden change in air temperature, it will set off an alarm. They also have motion sensors that send out a microwave signal, these are ideal for people with pets that roam freely about the house, these will prevent sending false alarms.
Glassbreak Detectors do just that, when they hear the distinct frequency of breaking glass, like when a burglar breaks a window to enter your home, it triggers an alarm. There are different styles of these type of detectors.
The Door and Window Sensors or Contacts are typically a magnetic contactor, this has the advantage of when you go to set your system, it will tell you if there are any windows or doors that are open. Also this is great if you happen to have teenage kids, it will let you know if they are trying to sneak out or if they are trying to sneak their friends into the house.
The Smoke-Heat Detectors are basically a smoke detector with a heat sensor built in, these are great to install in your garage, store rooms, kitchens and or furnace room if you happen to have one.
Now we come to the Home Monitoring Service, a monitoring service will monitor your home or office 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year, whether you are at home or not. The service will contact the police in case someone tries to break in to your home, or call the local fire department if there should be a smoke detector in alarm.
